Estuaries are where the river meets the sea, often in an exquisitely tangled web of streams, inlets, coves, and shifting islands. Viewed from above, they resemble abstract maps. Estuaries are among the richest ecosystems in the world; many animals rely on estuaries for food, places to breed, and migration stopovers. For humans, they offer food, recreation, and access to the global commerce of high seas. Historically, they have also been places where humans send the refuse from our built environments.

 

Estuaries are where nature and human ambition mingle intimately, with positive and negative effects. This series seeks to convey both the fluid beauty of such sites and their potential for tragic decline.
